For several months afterward, the bone and soft tissue around your teeth are still stabilizing, and without a retainer, teeth drift back toward old positions. Types of Retainers We Provide
Removable Retainers
Custom-made from your digital scan, removable retainers hold every tooth precisely where treatment put it. They come out for meals and brushing, travel well, and are the workhorse of long-term retention.
Fixed (Bonded) Retainers
If recommended or requested, a custom wire fixed retainer can be bonded behind the front teeth, working invisibly around the clock. It’s designed to protect your teeth alignment as facial muscles tighten with age. However, you will still need a full coverage removable retainer to maximize teeth stability. Your family dentist/hygienist will check it at your six-month cleanings. If it ever interferes with hygiene, it can be removed and replaced with a removable retainer.
Your Retainer Wear Schedule
Retention at Embrace follows a clear progression, tailored by Dr. K:
- First 3 months: full-time wear. Retainers stay in around the clock (except meals and brushing) while bone and tissue stabilize.
- After 3 months: Retainers are to be worn every night. Especially if wisdom teeth are still developing.
- Long term: As our treatment coordinator says, “Night time for a lifetime.”
Caring for Your Retainers
- Heat is the enemy. Retainer plastic warps above about 115°F; keep retainers away from dishwashers, car dashboards and heaters.
- Case, always. If it’s not in your mouth, it’s in the case, never a napkin, never a pocket.
- Cats and dogs love retainers. Keep them out of reach of pets; they will chew them.
- Clean daily. Gently scrub with a toothbrush and mild liquid soap, and rinse thoroughly. A denture-cleaning soak helps remove plaque and tartar buildup.
Retainers live in your mouth for years, so periodic replacement is normal. Your treatment includes one set of retainers at completion; lost or neglected retainers can be replaced for a fee, and thanks to your stored digital scan, replacements are easy to make. If a retainer loosens or breaks, contact us right away, before teeth start wandering.
Habits That Call for Stronger Retention
Some patterns put extra pressure on a finished smile: mouth breathing, clenching or grinding, tongue thrusting or unusual tongue posture, lip sucking, pen biting, playing a reed instrument, and cases that started with spacing or severely rotated teeth. Tell Dr. K if any of these apply; your retention plan will be built stronger to match.

What happens if I stop wearing my retainer completely?
Teeth begin drifting, slowly at first, then noticeably. It’s part of natural aging, not a failure of your treatment, but it’s preventable. If you’ve been out of the habit, don’t force an old retainer that no longer fits; call us and we’ll assess where things stand.
Can I skip my retainer for a night?
An occasional missed night during the nights-only phase won’t undo your result; a missed month can. If a retainer starts feeling tight after time off, that’s teeth moving, and your cue to get back on schedule.
How fast can a lost retainer be replaced?
Quickly. Because we keep your digital records, a replacement can usually be made without new impressions. Call as soon as it goes missing; the replacement fee is far cheaper than re-treatment.
Is a bonded retainer better than a removable one?
They’re teammates, not rivals. Bonded wires protect the front teeth continuously with zero compliance required; removable retainers hold the whole arch. Many patients have both, and Dr. K prescribes the combination your case needs.
