Appliance Problems: Usually Fixable at Home First
Sometimes appliances break or bend during treatment. If you notice a loose band, loose bracket, or a broken or poking wire, call our office during patient hours for a repair appointment. Until we see you:
- Poking tie wire? Cover it with orthodontic wax, or gently tuck it under the archwire with a blunt tool like a pencil eraser or cotton swab.
- Poking archwire? It can often be eased back with a pencil eraser, or, as a last resort, carefully clipped with clean nail clippers. Cover any rough end with wax or wet cotton.
- Loose band or bracket? Leave it in place; it can usually stay put safely until your repair visit. Call us during patient hours so we can schedule the reattachment.
If the irritation continues after your home fix, call us again; don’t wait out real pain. And a quick honesty note: for everyone’s scheduling sanity, appliance repairs are handled by appointment rather than walk-in, and we’ll get you in promptly.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth or Teeth
A blow to the mouth is a different category. Whether or not you’re in orthodontic treatment:
- Ice the injured area immediately.
- Contact your regular dentist first. Displaced, knocked-out or fractured teeth usually need an X-ray and treatment our office isn’t equipped to provide, and time matters.
- Then call us. If your appliances were dislodged or bent in the injury, we’ll repair or adjust them as soon as you’ve been cleared by your dentist, working around your comfort level.

Pain After Hours

What actually counts as an orthodontic emergency?
Three things: significant pain that home measures don’t relieve, trauma to the mouth or teeth, and infection signs like swelling. Almost everything else, including poking wires and loose brackets, is a “repair soon” rather than an emergency, and we’ll always help you tell the difference by phone.
Is a bracket coming off an emergency?
Usually not. A loose bracket typically stays safely tethered to the wire until we reattach it. Call during patient hours, avoid hard and sticky foods in the meantime, and note which tooth it is so we can plan the repair.
A wire is stabbing my cheek at night. What do I do?
Dry the wire tip and press orthodontic wax over it; a piece of wet cotton works in a pinch. If wax won’t hold, gently nudge the wire flat with a pencil eraser. That buys comfort until we can trim it properly, and if pain persists, call us.
